Spindle Tooling
TERSA is a brandname of a cutterblock knife system which is found in higher end thicknessers, planers and moulder cutterheads. Basically, instead of having a knife which fits into a milled "kerf" in a cutterblock (e.g. on a thicknesser), which is held in place with a number of machine bolts, the TERSA system works on a cam locking system without bolts. The back of each TERSA knife has a milled concave strip along the length of the blade. This fits into a corresponding (convex) milled strip inside the cutterblock. A long "wedge" is then inserted (from either end of the cutter block) directly alongside the knife. Then, when the machine is turned on, the wedge is engaged via centrifugal force exerted on the cutter block.

To change the blades you simply insert them and make sure they are lined up at either end. Then turn on the machine. The wedges go "thunk" as they engage, and the knives are now perfectly aligned to 0.001 thou. The beauty of this system, besides the fact that it is lightning fast to change blades, is that the user can put in segmented knives of any length, anywhere along the cutterblock. If one knife becomes damaged, this section can be swapped over for a new one.
